Tech Time Cincinnati is a dedicated advocate for our seniors, who are the pillars of our community. However, as technology rapidly advances, many seniors are being left behind, especially in areas crucial to their cognitive health. We believe it’s time for a change to bridge the gap in communication with the power of technology in cognitive care. While technology platforms like Happy Neuron have the potential to transform cognitive care, implementing these tech solutions requires government support and action. We are launching this petition to make technology-based cognitive care a mandatory practice for seniors, covered by medical insurance, to ensure seniors receive the quality care they deserve.
Why This Matters
The decline in cognitive health among seniors is real and alarming. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, and this number is projected to reach nearly 13 million by 2050. Cognitive impairment affects seniors' quality of life, independence, and overall health, increasing the burden on families and healthcare systems. Current care practices are often inadequate, and more innovative approaches are desperately needed.
The Power of Technology in Cognitive Care
Programs like Happy Neuron, a cognitive training platform, offer scientifically validated exercises that can help maintain and even improve cognitive functions. Happy Neuron provides interactive games and activities that target essential cognitive skills such as memory, attention, language, and problem-solving. These activities are not only engaging but have been proven to make a difference. A study by The Lancet reported that cognitive training could potentially delay the onset of dementia and improve cognitive function in older adults.
Integrating Technology Into Daily Care
Enhance Mental Stimulation: Regular cognitive exercises promote mental agility, helping seniors maintain their independence and well-being.
Delay Cognitive Decline:Evidence shows that ongoing cognitive training can slow down the progression of conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's.Improve
Quality of Life: Engaging seniors in mentally stimulating activities can reduce feelings of isolation and depression, enhancing their overall quality of life.
Our Vision for Change: We propose that cognitive care through technology becomes a mandatory practice in senior care facilities and at-home care, covered by medical insurance. To implement this vision, home health aides and nurse aides need to be trained in using these platforms effectively. Tech Time Cincinnati has developed a comprehensive two-week training program that equips nurse aides with the knowledge and skills to seamlessly integrate cognitive care technology into daily routines.
How This Works
To ensure the success of this technology-based cognitive care program, we propose that an Occupational Therapist (OT) at each facility oversee the implementation and monitor patient progress. After initial training is provided by Tech Time Cincinnati or another approved organization, the OT will take charge of integrating the cognitive care technology into patients’ routines. Occupational Therapists are highly skilled in cognitive rehabilitation and are well-equipped to adjust care plans as needed, ensuring that each senior receives tailored and effective support. This model allows for a seamless, hands-off transition post-training, prioritizing the well-being of our seniors regardless of which organization provides the initial training.
Mandatory Training: A MedTech will complete a 40-hour training program divided into two parts: 20 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of hands-on MedTech patient care, focusing on implementing cognitive care educational platforms.
Daily Integration: Trained aides will use these tools to engage seniors daily, tracking progress and adapting activities to individual needs. Insurance Coverage: Cognitive care technology will be recognized as a necessary healthcare service, making it eligible for coverage under medical insurance.
Regular Evaluation: Regular assessments will ensure the platform's effectiveness, allowing for continuous improvements in care.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Our founder at Tech Time Cincinnati has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of cognitive decline in seniors. After seeing a loved one struggle with dementia, she committed to making technology a bridge to a better quality of life for others. Our community-driven approach focuses on empowerment, education, and support for individuals and businesses through technology. We are not alone in this mission. Stories from families across the country echo the same concern: traditional care is not enough. A 2020 study in the Journal of Aging and Health revealed that seniors who regularly engage in cognitive training are less likely to experience significant cognitive decline. These findings underscore the need for innovative, tech-driven solutions in senior care.
At Tech Time Cincinnati, we’ve seen firsthand the power of technology in transforming senior care through our Tech It Easy training program. With a 95% success rate, our classes have helped seniors gain confidence in using technology to support their cognitive health and daily activities. This success is a testament to how effective technology-driven cognitive care can be when implemented correctly. Now, we’re calling on policymakers to make this a reality for all seniors by mandating cognitive care platforms as part of their standard care – because every senior deserves the chance to thrive with the support of technology.
